The Gates Cambridge Scholarship Programme, launched in October 2000 with a US$ 210 million gift from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge, is the largest single contribution ever made to a UK university.
Deserving international students receive complete scholarships to pursue full-time postgraduate study in any discipline at the University of Cambridge. PhD applicants will win around two-thirds of these scholarships, with 25 available in the US and 55 in the global round.

Courses in which Gates Cambridge Scholarships are not available include:
- Any undergraduate degree, including a second BA or an undergraduate BA associated with another BA
- Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
- Non-degree courses
- Part-time degrees
- MBA (Master of Business)
- Doctorate in Business (BusD)
- PGCE
- MBBChir Clinical Studies
- MFin, or Master of Finance
- MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
Scholarship Coverage
The following benefits are available to the Gates Cambridge Scholarship recipient:
- The university composition fee assessed at the appropriate rate
- PhD researchers can get up to a four-year assistance stipend to assist one student. In 2024-2025, a full year costs £20,000 (prorated for shorter courses).
- Arrival immigration costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge
- A single economy ticket is valid for both the beginning and end of the course.
- Money for Academic Advancement: Depending on how long you’ve studied, you could be eligible for up to £2,000 in conference and seminar expenses.
- Fieldwork: You may be eligible to keep your current maintenance income while completing fieldwork for your PhD. Any additional fieldwork expenses should be funded by the University Composition Fee rather than the Trust.
- In 2024-2025, the family allowance is £11,604 for one child and £16,548 for two or more. A partner is not reimbursed monetarily.
- Money for hardship: for unexpected challenges that the student faces.
- Applying for maternity/paternity leave permits you to take a six-month break from your studies while still receiving your maintenance stipend.
